Importance of Computers

The phenomenal growth of computers in modern society has been dramatic and spectacular. In virtually any office today, the computer has become an indispensable tool in facilitating communication and work. Computers knowledge are so important that governments around the world have sought to introduce computer classes as one of the core subjects in the education curriculum too. In addition, the use of computers has simplified many previously complex tasks to a mere touch of a few buttons on the keyboard. Despite the overwhelming convenience brought about by the use of computers, there are also inherent dangers in this information revolution. Although knowledge of computers has brought much benefits to modern society, it has also created a new host of problems too.

From a bulky and cumbersome machine, the computer has evolved into a sleek and powerful tool which cannot be ignored in today's society. From schools to workplaces, it has claimed a dominant position because of its many useful functions. Certainly it cannot be doubted that computer knowledge is essential in our world today. Basic computing skills like word processing and statistical calculations have become norms in the criteria of job offers. The presence of internet has revolutionized they way people communicate and interact. Geographical distance has been overcome by the linkage opened up by computer networking or internet social networking. Business transactions, dissemination of information and interpersonal interactions have all been incorporated in the computerization process. Thus, a person who is computer illiterate would find himself swamped by the technological revolution that is occurring.

Though computers have so much usefulness, several problems have arisen too. One of the most disturbing aspects of computerization is the fact that with increased dependence on the computer, people's personal lives become much more easily encroached upon. The recent spate of movies which depict how a person's personal records can become easily tampered with using a computer is something which is worrying. The invasion of our private lives through access by computers is a danger that demonstrates the flip side of computerization. Another problem is the rise of computer crimes utilizing the expertise of 'hackers'. In addition, some people have also raised the concern that computers can immerse individuals into a fantasy world and make them lose touch of reality. The obsession some children have with computer games is a manifestation of this worry.

Even though the computer knowledge is essential in today's world, it can also carry with it many dangers which must be fully recognized. Only then can we make use of the knowledge we have instead of abusing it or letting it run wild by itself.
